Honey! That is what we are talking about..still. September is National Honey Month.
If you missed it, I spoke with Thinus, the “hive evangelist” at Raw Honey USA about the top 5 things you need to know about honey. He shared all his wisdom about the types of honey and the overlooked details that are a must know. (Now, would be the perfect time to go back and read the blog post.)
But the buck doesn’t stop there. Research suggests we are only beginning to understand all the healthy benefits of honey and there are so many benefits. Bella Mae’s Tea challenged Thinus to share the top three benefits of using honey.
- Honey is loaded with vitamins, minerals & nutrients. Raw honey contains vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5 and C, along with minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium and zinc. It is also packed with antioxidants, a wide range of enzymes and amino acids.
- It may reduce the risk of chronic disease. Research suggests that raw honey is packed with antioxidants, including flavonoids & phytochemicals, which help fight free radicals and reduce oxidative stress – which have been linked to chronic disease and ageing.
- Antibacterial & anti-inflammatory properties. The hydrogen peroxide & glucose oxidase in raw honey exhibit antibacterial traits. It contains phenols & flavonoid compounds with anti-inflammatory effects. Studies suggest it can kill germs & heal wounds.

Honey sticks also known as honey straws is an amazing option to add a little sweetness to your life, get your daily fix of honey, and of course receive your nutritional benefits. When asked the ‘hive evangelist” about his take on honey sticks, he replied, “it’s a healthier snack choice especially for lunches without leaving a mess. The important thing to consider with honey sticks is what type of honey the straw is filled with”.
If the honey is raw, pure or even flavoured with all-natural ingredients, but has not been overly processed, heated or artificially flavoured, it can be a great source of energy, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants as well as a good way to boost your immune system.
Be sure to avoid those brands that include artificial flavourings and colorants. It would also be wonderful if the plastic straws could be replaced with something more biodegradable!
